SIDNEY/SHERBURNE – On June 2 and 3, the Sidney Jazz Ensemble, Sidney Small Ensemble, Sidney Concert Band and Sidney Marching Band competed in the 68th Annual Sherburne Pageant of Bands held in Sherburne, N.Y.
Sidney competed in the “A” Division at this year’s pageant, which represented schools from all over New York. 2017 marked Sidney’s 46th year competing.
Friday evening, the jazz ensemble began its performances, and blew away the competition with an impressive 1st place finish. This is especially noteworthy, given that Sidney’s ensemble has students in grades 6-12. They also scored the second highest overall score in the competition, which included a total of 21 schools.
Following the “jazzers,” the small ensemble performed for the judges, giving an excellent performance for which they were awarded a solid 2nd place finish.
Saturday was a beautiful day for a band pageant, and the Warriors came ready to give it their all. The Sidney High School Concert Band pulled out all the stops, finishing 2nd in the demanding concert category.
The afternoon stayed sunny and breezy and the Sidney Warriors stayed focused, placing 3rd in the parade category of the pageant.
At the end of the parade route, the drumline peeled off from the rest of the band and strode into Marauder Stadium for cadence competition. They gave an exciting performance, but missed medal contention by one place.
Gregg Norris, director of instrumental music for grades 7-12, said, “All in all, it was an excellent day for the Sidney Warriors. All band and colorguard members are to be congratulated for an outstanding effort.” To participating students, Norris said, “Your hard work, focus and dedication have paid off and you should be extremely proud of yourselves.” Norris added, “The Warriors would also like to thank the Sidney Central School and community for [its] continued support, and we look forward to attending next year’s 69th Annual [Sherburne] Pageant of the Bands.”
