UNADILLA – Unatego Elementary School recently participated in the inaugural New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Poster Contest. Monday, Dec. 18 Unatego third-grader Aubre Tweedie of Unadilla was announced first-place category winner for all of New York State.
The poster initiative, open to students in grades three through five, paired art and physical education classes within schools across the state and was launched as a cross-curricular effort to get kids excited about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Using the theme, “Physical Activity = Happy & Healthy Students,” 18 Unatego Elementary entries were submitted to the contest.
Tweedie, 8, was awarded $250 for her winning entry, which features colorful painted runners and a cheering crowd done in collage motif.
Unatego Elementary physical education teacher Kelly Wolner was awarded a reciprocal $250, with which to purchase physical education supplies.
Wolner, a NYS AHPERD-accredited member, said the “brand-new, project-based learning idea” was a hit with students.
“They were very excited when I presented it to them,” she said. “I really wanted to be able to integrate (art and physical education) and give the kids something to try and to get excited about.” Wolner said she introduced the project in her classes Sept. 26 and art students began working on the posters Sept. 27.
Unatego Elementary art teacher Josette Wood said she guided students in the poster-making process by exposing them to the work of artist Keith Haring.
