AFTON – Sen. Fred Akshar, R – Afton, named Afton senior Tracy Hatton his 17th “Akshar All-Star” in a brief presentation made Feb. 20 at Afton Central School, the senator’s alma mater.
Tracy, 18, was honored for her dogged commitment to academics, alongside activity within school and community groups. Tracy is a member of Akshar’s youth mentoring program YES Leads, the National Honor Society and her church, as well as a three-sport athlete. She resides with her family in Coventry.
In a previous presentation, Akshar said, the recognition initiative aims to “really encourage smart, intelligent young people that are doing great things … at school and in the community.” Tracy is Afton Central School’s first Akshar All-Star.
Tracy’s mother, Tammy Hatton, said the honor was deserved.
“She’s overcome a lot, in terms of struggles with learning,” she said. “So, it’s awesome.”
Extolling her daughter’s well-roundedness, Tammy added, “She’s a good student … and she stays very involved.”
High school guidance counselor at Afton Central Jill Nordberg said she was part of a “small committee” designated to narrow the pool of candidates. Tracy, she said, stood out for her work ethic and dedication to excellence.
“She’s a really good kid and a hard-worker who’s overcome a lot,” Nordberg said. “She sets big goals for herself and has had to work harder than a lot of other kids, but she’s done a phenomenal job.”
