BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford’s Lady Bobcats kept things exciting in the Section IV championship game, played Sunday afternoon at SUNY Cortland.
The No. 1-ranked team secured its 59-48 victory in the final two minutes against the No. 3-seeded Senecas of Watkins Glen.
Adding to the already-high stakes, the Bobcats had history with the Class C title defenders, having lost three out of the last four sectional games played against Watkins Glen.
The sectional win marks B-G’s first in 19 years. Coach Bob Conway is in his 27th year with the Lady Bobcats.
B-G senior and co-captain Megan Palmatier, 18, led scoring, with a game total of 20 points. Not far behind was co-captain Abi Selfridge, 16, a B-G junior, with 17 points.
In a press statement, Palmatier emphasized the team’s focus on remaining calm and confident.
She said, “We just relaxed and played our game. (We) truly believed the entire game that we were going to win.”
That win, Palmatier said, was made sweeter by the team’s record with the Senecas.
“For the last four years that we’ve been here,” she said, “we just haven’t been able to get it done. It feels really good (and this is) something that we’ve been working for for a long time now.”
Erica Selfridge, a freshman and leading defender on the team, collected seven points for the game, but made what Conway called “a big, big play” when she widened a one-point lead to 50-46, B-G.
