SIDNEY – Members of the Sidney Veterans Memorial Park Association hosted the park’s annual dedication ceremony Saturday, with roughly 200 attending.
Though speakers discussed bringing the park from dream to reality and the meaning of Memorial Day, a ceremony highlight was recitation of the names and service details of the 57 men and women added to Victory Wall in the past year; 24 nameplates and 33 plaques, representing veterans from World War I on, were added. The wall, expected to expand in the next year, bears approximately 250 names.
Association First Vice President Dick Germond noted, “We wanted the park to tell the stories of service … and ensure that (veterans’) service and likenesses would not be forgotten.”
For many, the walk up the bluestone court to Victory Wall was a poignant first. As such, Saturday’s ceremony was followed by much misty-eyed mingling and remembrance along the wall.
