AFTON – The streets of Afton will fill with 70 food and sales vendors, free children’s activities, classic cars and more Saturday as the Greater Afton Area Chamber of Commerce presents Afton Sidewalk Day.
Though the event has come under the auspices of different community groups since its inception in the ‘50s, this year marks the chamber’s second time presenting Afton Sidewalk Day.
Chamber President John Hinman said the decision to continue backing the event was an easy one for chamber officials.
“The chamber is all about commerce,” he said, “and what greater way to bring attention to area businesses and connect them and draw people to Afton than to have 70 vendors on Main Street? It’s going to be like a big fair, with something for kids and all ages.”
Chamber Secretary Judy Hinman also emphasized the day’s potential to impact area businesses.
“I always loved the fest when I was a kid … and we wanted to see it back,” she said. “It’s important for Afton to have events where we bring in outsiders and customers.”
Following the success of Afton Sidewalk Day 2017, the Hinmans said, chamber officials were determined to expand this year’s event.
“It is quite a bit bigger,” Judy said. “Last year we had in the neighborhood of 40 vendors and, by our last count, we have 69 coming Saturday.”
“We had a really big turnout last year,” John added, noting that “a couple thousand people” attended. “We had more people than we had vendors for last year, so that inspired us … and really pushed us to double it in size.”
All-new highlights, organizers said, will include a kids’ LEGO contest, an ongoing cornhole tournament, a small-animal petting zoo and a car cruise-in.
